With many of the food banks pushed to the brink this year because of COVID-19, Performance Plastics is hosting our Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive.  Following strict COVID-19 guidelines, we are gathering non-perishable, shelf stable canned goods for donation to a local church.

Many food banks and pantries are facing decreased food donations while more families than ever are visiting for the first time.  In the southwest Ohio area, one in every four children and 15% of the elderly live in poverty.

Working with a local church, we are collecting items which they have requested. “With many families in our community facing struggles this year, its more important than ever to help” stated Christina Smith Second Shift Leader at Performance Plastics, and member of the First Baptist Church. Christina is our Thanksgiving Food Drive Leader. “COVID has put so many people in a hard place, it’s the least we can do”.

In addition to items donated by employees, Performance Plastics is matching monetary donations.  Our plan is to donate all the items and cash to the church in plenty of time, so everyone has a great holiday.

Happy Thanksgiving

Introducing the EnduroSharp® Nutplate Abrasion Tool “The NAT”. The NAT consists of six components 1 each upper handle (top), 1 each lower handle (base) and 4 each nutplate base inserts.

The NAT along with the specially designed abrasive pads (sold separately) allows the maintainer to quickly abrade the bond surface of CR series nutplates.  The tools radially abrades the bond surface of the nutplate, ensuring that 100% of bond surface is abraded uniformly in a matter of minutes.

The NAT is available with or without a convenient carrying case. The rugged case comes with a high-density custom foam insert for easy inventory and protection.

NAT “CR Series” Abrasive Pads

Nutplate Abrasion Tool (NAT) Operational Flow Chart

Nutplate Abrasion Tool (NAT) Instructions

A.  Select the appropriate unused abrasive pad that matches the nutplate being installed.

B.  Align flats on an unused abrasive pad with the flats and detent pins in the NAT upper handle (top) and snap into place.

C.  Ensure abrasive pad is fully seated in the top portion of the NAT.

D.  Align and snap the NAT nutplate insert that matches the size of the nutplate being installed into the NAT lower handle (base).

E.  Solvent wipe the nutplate being installed with the appropriate solvent and AMS3819 wipes.

F.  Seat nutplate into the cavity of the nutplate insert

G.  Align NAT top with base, press together, feeding the nutplate fixture through the hole in the abrasive pad and seat the nutplate bond surface to be abraded against the abrasive pad.

H.  Oscillate the abrasive pad back and forth 15 times by rotating the NAT top and base back in opposite directions

I.  Separate the NAT top from the base

J.  Inspect nutplate bond surface for uniform abrasion (Do not touch, wipe or clean the abraded surface). Reseat nutplate in the NAT nutplate insert and measure the abraded nutplate surface with the Surface Analyst (SA reading less than 50 is required). Re-abrade if necessary.

K.  Discard the used abrasive pad.

L.  Apply appropriate adhesive to nutplate bond surface and install in structure per Technical Data or manufactures directions.

Many industrial processes require high performance materials in friction/wear applications. Traditionally this has been the realm of lubricated metals, but with the increasing demand for performance and lighter weight specifications, advancements in material science have brought engineered plastics to the forefront. Engineered plastics bring the benefits of lighter weight, longer part life cycles and lower failure rates. These applications were previously only possible with metal. Performance Plastics injection molds engineered plastics in complex geometries with extreme dimensional tolerances. The material space in play requires wear resistance, high strength, high temperature resistance, and low creep in a non-lubricated environment.

Friction/Wear applications are those that encompass wear, friction and lubrication interactions that produce surfaces that behave in relative motion in natural and artificial systems. They are complex, multi-disciplinary applications which require contributions from engineering, chemistry, chemical engineering and mechanical engineering. Friction/Wear applications can be found in healthcare, aerospace, nanotechnology and most importantly in applications enhancing energy efficiency and reducing carbon footprints.

Friction/Wear applications using polymers and their composites include gears, bearings, bushings, coatings, automobile brake pads and various other types of surfaces for optimum tactile performance. Performance Plastics partners with the experts at PBI Performance Products utilizing their proprietary product Celazole ® and our joint technologies to offer our customers specialized solutions to their most challenging issues.

Performance Plastics, located in Cincinnati, OH has over 30 years’ experience in molding specialized fluoropolymers for the aerospace, medical, power generation and other industries. We have developed proprietary processes enabling products that provide wear resistance, high strength and high temperature resistance.

As we get closer and closer to developing a safe and effective vaccine for the current COVID-19 epidemic, another national crisis is amidst. The shortage of specialized medical grade glass containers could delay the response to delivering the vaccine.

The task of delivering a vaccine to the majority of the world’s population is so vast that global production of pharmaceutical vials needs to be ramped up by 20% within two years, a job the AMA says requires immediate preparation. Under the best of circumstances, a 20% increase in two years will create shocks to the supply chain.

Corona Virus

Plastic Vials

The shortage in glass has been an ongoing issue. With all the usual consumers of recyclable glass (restaurants and bars) being closed due to the pandemic, the large volume of glass supplies needed are simply not available to meet demand. With the need for glass going up and the supply of glass going down, the requirement for an alternative material to produce the needed vials is desperate.

Highly engineered thermoplastic materials such as Fluoropolymer’s are a great, economical alternative material to medical grade glass. Their inherent properties of transparency, compatibility with organic compounds and unmatched durability make them ideal for the medical industry. And most important, there is plenty of material. Thermoplastic vials can be produced and delivered as demand increases with minimal lead-time.

Performance Plastics, located in Cincinnati, OH has over 30 years’ experience in molding fluoropolymers for the medical industry. We have developed proprietary processes enabling the tooling and injection of small, thin-walled, complex medical consumables.

Aircraft maintenance is the most important activity that airlines and owners should never underestimate. This maintenance does not stop at the engine, it also includes fasteners, adhesives, and sealants. Aerospace fasteners, adhesives and sealants are vital components to make sure an aircraft can safely fly. The advancement of fasteners, adhesives, and sealants also creates an advancement in products to efficiently replace old fastener, adhesive, and sealants. At Performance Plastics, we have seen the need to improve the tools maintainers use for aircraft maintenance, which is why we created our EnduroSharp® product line.

The EnduroSharp® product line has changed the way aerospace maintenance professionals remove sealants and adhesives from substrates and fasteners. Instead of using ineffective metal scrapers and blades, we have created a line of non-marring aircraft maintenance tools. It is our goal to make these tools as efficient as possible, which is why we are constantly wanting feedback from maintainers on all our tools. Most recently we have been working on feedback we have received from our EnduroSharp® Torlon® Adhesive Reamer tools. Maintainers thought the tool worked great, but great can always be better.

The EnduroSharp® Torlon® Adhesive Reamer tools were created to fit into a drill we had in our lab here at Performance Plastics. What we did not know is that the end of our Reamer tool did not correctly lock into other drills used by maintainers. Therefore, we corrected the issue and redesigned the end of our Reamers to make sure that they fit every drill an aircraft maintainer could possibly use.

At Performance Plastics, we take pride in our ability to solve problems, even when it is our own problem. We know how important it is to use tools that allow you to efficiently and effectively do your job. We take all feedback seriously and want to make our products the best they can be for every person using them.
